Room Design

After a long winter, it's incredibly nice to be able to go to your summer house and "open" it for the season. One of the first considerations you may have is how your summer house living room should be designed. You're not looking for the same type of coziness that you have at home. You want something that's still conducive to family, but will encourage warm breezes and long walks on the beach, not long stays indoors.

Whether you will visit this home on weekends throughout the warm season, or if it will become a semi-permanent home, the living room is a space that's important to family and also important for entertaining. The living room is probably the second most used rooms of the house, the first being the kitchen, of course. This room will be where guests will be entertained and families will come together when they're not out playing on the beach.

A wonderfully freeing addition to a summer living room is the use of bead board on the walls. This adds to the cottage type atmosphere that you're looking to create. The walls should either be painted a stark white that would contrast nicely with the wood grains of the trim around the doorways and along the floors, or they should be painted a light color such as field green or sky blue. A summer house living room should give the feel of being outdoors even when stuck in the house on a rainy day. These colors will help create that look and feel within your living room.

Living Room Decorating Ideas

If you've decided to decorate your living room in a classic or traditional style, this second part of our two part series will provide you with some wonderful tips and ideas...

Furnishings

Elegance and comfort are essential elements of the classic style living room. Choose a boxy-shaped sofa with comfortable, soft cushions covered in a longwearing woven stripe or damask. Team it with a selection of different seating styles, covered in toning but different fabrics. This looks more natural than a matching suite, and you can pick up bargains to revamp. A chesterfield or chaise longue adds an authentic touch.

Glass-fronted cupboards are perfect for displaying favorite china or old books. Chests and trunks with upholstered tops - or draped with a shawl or throw - provide a useful surface, and hidden storage space, too. Modern items such as the TV and stereo are best tucked away in built-in storage systems.

Look for small decorative tables to hold lamps and collections of silver-framed photos; or buy inexpensive particleboard tables and disguise them with matching floor-length circular cloths trimmed with deep fringing.

Create a soft, atmospheric glow with careful lighting. If you have a central chandelier, fit a dimmer switch so you can create a candle-like glimmer. Wall lights, table lamps, and floor lamps, or candles set around the room, create pools of warm light. Large Chinese-style vases in blue and white or green provide good lampbases; wood stained to a mahogany or ebony finish on brass bases are also ideal. Fit them with a simple parchment or pleated silk shade.

Large, gilt-framed landscapes or portraits look suitably imposing, together with a large framed mirror over the fireplace. Architectural engravings or botanical prints in narrow black frames add a sophisticated touch. Hang them in groups, perhaps linked with a picture bow or stick-on, printed classical swags and borders.

Choose ornaments carefully, avoiding a cluttered look; a single big plaster bust - some museums sell copies of original antiquities - placed on a side table or in the hearth, has real impact. Symmetry is an important element - matching stylized china dogs or cats either side of the hearth is a typical classic look; or place matching china figurines on the mantelpiece.

Details

Small touches can create the impression of graceful living that typifies classic style. Flowers are always important; create a big, splashy formal display of greenery and twigs, and supplement it with fresh flowers in season. Place bowls of scented dried flower heads or potpourri on tables for a drift of perfumed air.

Handworked items, such as tapestry cushions, old silver, and leather-bound books, create a sense of the past. Group objects together carefully to complement each other.

Living Room Ideas

Living room ideas are among the most sought-after designs that people want for the interior of their homes. Living room decorating does, after all, impact the most shared space in the home, and the place where you likely spend the most of your time together.

Therefore, it is important that when you’re decorating your living room, you’re using living room decorating ideas that fit everybody’s tastes, while still being practical, appealing when guests are over, and easy to maintain. However, as so many people discover, such decorating ideas for a living room are often easier said than done. With such a long list of vital criteria, it’s not difficult to understand why!

Within a room with so many different purposes, you may feel that you need an awful lot of tips for decorating a living room in order to make it livable and presentable at the same time. Don’t worry, those tips are out there, and waiting for you to use them.

The following are some great living room decorating tips to help you to create a comfortable, attractive, practical space:

* Be careful when selecting your colors. When decorating a living room, light, and neutral colors are frequently the safest. This way, when you want to choose or change your furniture and accessories, you’ll be able to do so with the most freedom.

Save the Date next DNG Event is February 25th, 2010 from 7-9:30!

SAVE THE DATE our next Designer Networking Event will be held at FIFTH FLOOR on Thursday, February 25th from 7-9:30pm.

FIFTH FLOOR is located 502 Chung King Court Los Angeles, CA 90012 (Cross street Hill St.) PH 213 687 8443.

Opened in January of 2008, Fifth Floor is a hybrid art/design gallery in the heart of LA’s Chinatown. Owner, Robert Apodaca’s background in architecture sees that the space delights in a mixture of contemporary art and design. Work by varying artists, designers, and architects rotate through the exhibition areas every month to two months; all the while, a steady base of unique accessories, jewelry, furniture and design objects remain on display. Many of these hand-made objects and furniture pieces are available nowhere else besides Fifth Floor.

Fifth Floor´s
gallery shows a wide range of work from painting and mixed media to furniture and even architectural exhibits. We are interested in exploring the realms of both art and design and their multiple intersections. Often leaning heavily on tectonic and/or spatial notions we think that concept and craft should not be mutually exclusive terms. While not every exhibition is conceptually driven, these often do explore socially relevant topics such as sustainable design and community issues.

Robert Apodaca is a designer whose style focuses on simplicity of form, economy of materials and an elegant approach to problem solving. Currently living and working in Los Angeles, CA, Robert graduated from Otis College of Art and Design’s Architecture/Landscape/Interiors program in 2003. He spent several years working with various architecture and design firms, exploring what the design world had to offer. Greatly inspired by the creative possibilities that lay within the intersections of art, design, and architecture, he has taken those ideas into the heart of a number of exciting projects including Fifth Floor.

Street parking and lot parking available.

*An additional 10% off for DNG participants!

The purpose of our DNG Events is to bring talented individuals who work in the design industry to meet and network their talents and products.

PLEASE make sure you bring your business cards and portfolios and/or images of your work so you can share your products and design
work with our members. It is important that you bring your materials so we can see your work and products!

We look forward to seeing you on THURSDAY February 25th, 2010.

Please forward this invite to other designers, store owners, showroom managers, artists and product designers that you might know.

Interior Design Room

Designing a plain oversized bedroom can be a huge challenge to undertake. With its size, such a room can be difficult to decorate and creating a cozy atmosphere can be a little tricky. You have to be able to combine all the element designs seamlessly flowing all throughout the whole room. Every piece of furniture has to fit just right with all the ornaments to be incorporated. But this demanding feat can be accomplished just as long as you plan your time well and come up with a little ingenuity. To help you further along in coming up with creative ideas in designing you bedroom, here are a few suggestions.

The most initial thing you have to do is to plan and keep everything simple with a touch of artistic sense here and there. Just because the room is big, it does not mean you have to fill it up with a lot of furniture and ornaments. Start by picking out a nice bed or a small couch.

Your bed is the most basic thing in the room. Because the room is so large, it does mean you have to position it against the wall. It is preferable for a bed to face a direction where it will not be seen by someone entering the bedroom. You can add a little privacy to it by placing a large dresser with the back of it to the headboard. Placing folding floor screens at the head of the bed is also a good idea. Find side tables that will look well with your bed. Round tables are perfect side tables if you want to deviate from the traditional nightstands.

Living Paint Room

Your living room is the entertainment and living center of your home. Chances are that you've had some very memorable gatherings there, and it is where you relax and enjoy the company of family and friends. Because this room tends to be such a high traffic area, and to have so much time spent in it, it is often the first room to show signs of wear and tear and to begin to look dated. Luckily there are small changes (like switching out light bulbs) and big changes (like installing a new fireplace mantel) that can give your living room a new look and won't turn into a major DIY project, or turn your home into a construction site.

Consider painting your living room. A splash of paint can brighten things up or give your living room a different vibe altogether. You can repaint your living room the same color which will refresh the color and get rid of any scuff marks and dings. If you decide to paint the entire room, starting from the ceiling and working down is a good idea. On the other hand, if you'd like a bit of a color change without covering everything in plastic, a feature wall could be an option for you. Picking an interesting color that goes well with the room but adds a little spice can be an excellent way to transform your living room in no time at all.

Living Room Remodeling

Remodeling a garage to a room is often a cost-effective way to add living space to your home.

1. Because the foundation, roof and exterior walls are already built, you will not incur these costs.

2. You will be able to remodel the area with little disruption to the rest of your home.

3. You may already have the electrical wiring in place (most garages have lights and at least one electrical outlet)
as well as plumbing.

4. Depending upon local building codes, you may not need a building permit for your project.

Why would you need a building permit? This can vary from one location to another, but the primary issues are:
* Structural soundness

* Exits

* Heating and cooling

* Windows

* Ventilation

* Insulation

* Plumbing

* Electrical

In some areas, failure to build to local code can require that you restore the space to its original condition before you sell the house.

Living Room Decorating

Laltrogiorno Living Room Layout

Laltrogiorno Living Room Layout

In the past, living room or the parlor was the place with formal settings to welcome the honored guests. With times, it has evolved into a multifunctional room meant to welcome guests, sit and relax comfortably while reading a good book or watching TV, spend some time with the family, chat and gossip with friends and for entertainment. The most common furniture pieces found in the living room are sofas, love seat, sofa with chairs in different combinations, coffee table, end tables, ottomans, benches, shelves and perhaps a desk and bookshelves. If the living space is also used as a family room, you can also find TV and entertainment center in the room along with accessories, lighting, art and crafts on display and may be carpets.

An extra large living room may accommodate a piano, eating area complete with dining table, tennis or billiard table or even a number of plants, if your living space receives lots of direct sunlight. You may also shift am armoire to make use of the extra space for storage purposes. Living room can use maximum number of furnishings and it is a challenge to fit in all the desirable furnishings and accessories and coordinate them with carpeting, wall color, crown moldings, lighting style and window treatments among many other things. Usually, sofa or the entertainment center is the largest piece of furniture in a living room and since, placement of sofa will decide the view and focal point for the people seated in the living, room, use it as the starting point for living room decor.

Express your personality, your personal taste and decorating flair in the way you decorate your living room. Remodeling or decorating your living room doesn't just mean to throw away items and add furniture pieces to the living room but how you arrange what you already have in the room. Arrangement mistakes can ruin the look of your room. Do not go wild with imagination. Some of the rules and traditional ways of keeping things and proper design must be followed to keep things sane. Creative and unusual living room decorating ideas should be limited by the comfort and usability of the room to make the living room more inviting.

Designing in innovative ways that 'break the rules' can be tricky, so is best left to professionals. Ensure that you maintain visual balance and harmony while displaying your accessories and should not look chaotic. For budget decorating, try to use what you already and then only opt to buy new things that you think are absolutely necessary. See, if rearranging furniture and accessories can achieve the effect you want. For a dream living room, it is not necessary to start from scratch. Make sure that you do not let your precious collection of art lie wasted or ignored just because you didn't think of placing them correctly.

While decorating a living room, one must pay attention to the natural focal point of the room, lifestyle of the family members, functional placement of furniture, creating well-defined traffic patterns, creating close grouping and intimate conversational areas, visual balance, ambient lighting, color scheme of the room and fabric patterns of the curtains, window treatments and the upholstery. You must also watch out for organizing things, display of accessories, camouflaging architectural elements that are ugly, hanging art and wall groupings, proportion and scale of decoration, unifying factor of your decoration and most importantly, when to stop.
